PS5 Slim in the future and why id wait before I buy a PlayStation 5

The PS5 launch is still too fresh for a PS5 Slim to be announced yet – ‘Slim’ models have in the past usually launched three years after a new console.

However for those wanting to play the long game like myself, as im in no rush to try and grab one as of yet – the PS5 Slim will be my choice.

Slim editions of PlayStation consoles have been around almost as long as PlayStation itself. There was the slimmed down ‘PS1’ Original, PS2, PS3 and the PS4 slim.

It’s no secret that PS5 consoles have been pretty tricky to get yourself one these days – and if you’re yet to grab a PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, it’s likely that you’ll be waiting until late 2021/early 2022 anyway for more widespread availability.

Not too much has been been mentioned in the way of PS5 Slim news and rumours up to this point – PlayStation 5 only made its debut in November 2020 – but there has already been a gorgeous fan-made render of what a slimmed-down PS5 console could end up looking like, courtesy of LetsGoDigital and Concept Creator.

In fact, Sony has already started to trim down the PS5, at least internally. New models of the PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-1100B, is a whopping 300 grams lighter than the launch model, and Sony even decided to change the screw that comes with the PS5’s stand, too. The console also has a redesigned heatsink, which resulted in a lighter system.

There are a few caveats to keep in mind when it comes to hardware revisions, though. Slim consoles can have a tendency to feel cheaper than launch models, which can sometimes be over-engineered, and sometimes features are even removed. The PS4 Slim, for example, removed the optical port which was found on the launch model.
