Have you ever wondered how to actually tame a mighty Stead in Minecraft? Well, now you can! With this guide, we’ll show you how to tame and ride a horse in the sandbox game. Whether you’re a new or old player, this guide will provide the perfect help for getting around the world of Minecraft on horseback. So saddle up and get ready for an adventure!
Step 1: What you will Need
Horse riding is possible with a saddle – which you won’t be able to make, but find in chests across the world. Yup, it’s like winning a treasure hunt every time you discover a new saddle!
If you’re feeling fancy, you can adorn your Horse with a coat of Horse Armor – can’t do the same for Donkey’s, Mules or Pigs though, (yep you can ride pigs) sorry. Finding Horse Armor is tricky but if you’re crafty one it can be made!
You can equip a Donkey or Mule with a Chest to have it hold supplies for you (you cannot add a chest to a Horse).
Step 2: Taming
Before you can horse around, you need to break it in like a wild stallion!
Taming a wild horse can be quite a challenge, but luckily there’s an easy method. All you have to do is give it a pat on the head without anything in your hands and voila! You’re one step closer to becoming best friends. Just be sure not to punch it in the head! Of course, it might not always go smoothly and the Horse may try and buck you off – but don’t worry, just keep trying! You can try to do the ‘heartbeat’ trick for taming a horse, or you could just give it snacks! Apples, Wheat, Golden Apples and Carrots, Hay Bales – it’s like a delicious and wild brunch buffet that any wild horse will surely love.
Now your Horse is tamed.
Step 3: Riding your Horse
Once your Horse is tamed, it will no longer buck you off, but you need to put a saddle on it before you can control where it goes.
Hop on the Horse or point in it’s direction and check out your inventory menu. Voila! Your inventory appears and so does the Horse’s menu. Grab that saddle, put it where outlined, and you’re ready for a ride!
Optionally, put armor on your Horse. It goes right below where you put the saddle.
Don’t even try to take your Horse for a splash if the water is deeper than one block! You’ll get thrown off and your poor horse will become an equine fish flopping around trying to breathe air! We;; it will swim but you may have to give your stead a push accross the waters to get him back on land. If this happens, grab that lead rope and pull him out quick – then you can jump back on for another ride!
Horses can stroll over flat surfaces and even hop over 1-block tall walls. Although some say they can leap mighty high, you do have different types of Horses in Minecraft – some are faster than others and others able to jump higher. Ready to take your horse-riding skills up a notch? All you need to do is hold down the jump button until the blue bar fills up (it’s easier than it sounds, I promise!), then release and you’ll be soaring! Don’t forget to move your steed forward at the same time – easy peasy!
Step 4: Chests & Pack-Horses
Want to add more utility to your Donkey, Mule, or Camel? Sure thing! Just chuck a chest onto ’em and you’re good to go. But just be warned – the chest won’t come off again, so if you want it back you’ll have to take matters into your own hands (and do something pretty humane).
Giddy up little Piggy
1. Put a Saddle on the Pig
If you want to ride a pig, you’ve gotta get yourself a saddle. Just make sure it’s in your hotbar to place in your little Piggy friend.
2. Hold a Carrot on a Stick
Gather round, friends – it’s time to put the ‘carrot’ before the ‘pig!’ Yup, you heard it right! Select the carrot on a stick in your hotbar, and you can control the movements of your pet pig like a true boss!
3. Mount the Pig
Hop on a pig and take it for a ride! Now you can experience life like never before.
Hubble Bubble – Horse Power
All it requires is a Potion of Swiftness or a Potion of Leaping (or both). If a player throws the potions on two different horses and gets them to breed while the effects are still active, their offspring will retain the boosted stats of their parents. You can then continue to breed your Horses creation some kind of super-mutant – super fast horse down the generations!
